ABSTRACT

The research described in this book aimed to investigate the different ways in which higher education, especially in universities, is conceptualised within Muslim contexts in general, and in one distinctive context in particular. In so doing, it has analysed the practical consequences and the challenges that follow from such conceptualisation. It explored supplementary matters such as the historical traditions of higher learning, the relationships of the different ideas of higher education between themselves, to the state and wider society, the contributions universities make via teaching and research to the basic problems of literacy, health and social welfare or issues of cultural importance.
