ABSTRACT

In this final chapter, the main points of each chapter are summarized and the current state of connectionist research in SLA is evaluated. Although connectionism has had a strong impact on cognitive science in general, its impact on SLA appears to be relatively modest, as can be seen in the reviews in this monograph. I have also conducted a citation count of connectionism in the journal Studies in Second Language Acquisition to assess the impact of connectionism to the field of SLA over the past 30 years, which shows its influence has been steadily increasing. Based on the evaluation, possible future directions for connectionist research in SLA are discussed.
