ABSTRACT

While the preceding chapter defined intelligence-led policing, a formal description is of relatively little value if the user does not understand the underlying conceptual process of how it is supposed to work. One significant cause for confusion in the analytical world begins with the range of different definitions of key roles and functions, as the first part of this chapter will show. A further cause of problems (especially among police executives) is a misunderstanding of the differences between data, information, knowledge and intelligence. The chapter aims to clarify the distinction between these terms.
