ABSTRACT

Released in June, 2010, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were developed through a state-led initiative coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). Governors and state commissioners of education from 48 states, 2 territories, and the District of Columbia committed to developing a common core of state standards in English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12. As specified by CCSSO and NGA, the Standards are (1) research and evidence based, (2) aligned with college and work expectations, (3) rigorous, and (4) internationally benchmarked.
