ABSTRACT

I have written this chapter six or seven times, over and over again, in the margins of my mind while walking around campus, in my dreams while sleeping, in my mental rolodex while running early morning in the park (which has become my custom), on the creased corners of paper napkins while eating lunch at P. F. Chang’s (lemon chicken being my favorite), while fl ying in the air enjoying the complimentary beverage service (cran-apple juice is my usual), or while sitting in the barbershop tuning out the “noisy chatter” about “last night’s [ball]game,” awaiting my turn in the chair. No matter how many times I write and re-write mental drafts of this chapter, several points “show up” time and time again.
