ABSTRACT

WHAT IS A “CAUSE”? Why does Saul complete his class exercises? Why does Janet wear six earrings? Whenever you ask “Why?” you are asking for conditions or events upon which behavior depends. The answers have a stated or implied “because”: Saul completes his class exercises because they count towards his grade. Janet’s boyfriend gave her the six earrings she wears, which is why she wears them. The word “because” does not necessarily appear in explanatory statements, as in the case of Janet’s boyfriend. It is implied.
