ABSTRACT

One of the ways of engaging families in schools is through a published scheme called Family Values. The scheme is highly successful in creating partnerships in a fun and active way and is based on the philosophy of values-based education. The Family Values Scheme was created by Gill Ellis and Nicola S. Morgan in 2009; it won the Leading Aspect Award in 2010 for its innovative way of engaging parents with schools and organisations, and was also a finalist for the TES National School Awards 2011. The scheme is also published by Routledge as Better Behaviour through Home–School Relations: Using Values-Based Education to Promote Positive Learning (Ellis et al., 2012). Research has shown that healthy families spend quality time together, listen to one another, provide encouragement and love, share chores and decisions and plan ahead. The Family Values scheme is designed to promote these ideals, as Figure 12.1 illustrates.
