Understanding Tragedy

Literary criticism uses the word tragedy in a narrower sense than the way in which we use it in normal conversation. For example, the critic Jennifer Wallace defines tragedy as ‘the art form created to confront the most difficult experiences we face: death, loss, injustice, thwarted passion, despair’ (Wallace 2007: 1).
