ABSTRACT
I have never written a professional essay in which I reflect directly upon my own life, although most of my scholarly writing flows more or less directly from my personal values and experiences. So this essay has proven to be the most difficult writing assignment of my career. What are the ideas, events and experiences that made me a feminist critic - or, more specifically, a lesbian feminist critic? More important, what are the meanings I have placed upon these experiences?
