ABSTRACT
When W. E. B. Du Bois, considered the primary tum-of-the-century AfroAmerican spokesman, later expropriates Cooper's famous statement in his essay "The Damnation of Women" (1920), he demonstrates why black women have fought to wrestle from black men the responsibility for representing themselves and their race.
