ABSTRACT

My cell phone did its generic warble and vibrate and I reflexively answered with an effort at professional demeanor. The voice on the other end introduced herself as Alexandra, the wife of an old college buddy. Following a second of frantic memory search, I recalled a tall, capable guy who seemed destined for success on Wall Street. Alexandra continued: “We’d like to hire you to design our vacation home in southern Maine.” She proceeded to elaborate, plunging into her agenda. “We’d like something contemporary yet traditional, spacious yet intimate, keeping in mind a fairly tight budget, and most importantly a design that evokes memories of summers in Maine when I was a child. Can you design a special place for us?”
