ABSTRACT
This chapter examines tests for 2 × 2 contingency tables where it is inappropriate to use the chi-square test for statistical independence described in Chapter 4. The situations examined reflect important considerations in choosing the best statistical techniques, not only for nominal variables but also for ordinal and metric ones. These situations are
small sample size;
lack of statistical independence among observations; and
the need to statistically control for confounding variables.
