ABSTRACT

The scientifi c revolution enabled us to understand how nature worked, and based on the laws discovered by science, technologies were able to be developed and resources processed to make goods and services available to people on a scale never before imagined. Science spawned the industrial revolution and changed societies in the Western world beyond recognition. Cities grew as factories were built to produce products and motivated people to move from farms to cities to take jobs in these factories and become part of the new industrial order. The feudal system that had governed people’s lives for years broke apart and new classes developed that refl ected this new order. Both nature and workers were exploited in the interests of creating economic wealth and promoting economic growth as nation-states sought to gain power and infl uence in this emerging order.
