ABSTRACT

One of the greatest challenges to the perceived relevance of the Olympic cultural programme is its apparent lack of media appeal. This is in stark contrast with the transformation of the Olympic Games into the most successful global media event of our times. A study of the kinds of media narratives generated by the cultural programme provides a basis to understanding how the programme is positioned within the Games hosting process and how this reflects the event’s cultural policy framework.
