ABSTRACT

Emphasize from the start that therapists need family members’ help to help their children. Look for and accentuate signs of caring and pain shared by children and adults.

Begin with caregiver and child goals and use to drive assessment and service planning. Utilize engaging messages, including affirmation of rights to choose other treatment programs, to work with other therapists, and openness about the purpose of sessions. Invite children and parents to share their expectations for the assessment.
