ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I present a history of torture and its legal abolition, focusing mainly on Europe. Torture played a central role in the evolution of law–state–society relations from ancient times to the early modern era. The questions explored here are: What purposes did torture serve? Who was subjected to torture and why? Why did torture eventually come to be seen as a problem rather than a solution to maintaining law and order?
