ABSTRACT
This chapter considers often the simultaneous stories that accompany artwork and what this tells us about the child who owns the expressive fiction, both through process and end product. It also considers how our observations can have an impact on children's art experiences and how we seek to extend and help plan for the next instalments in their journeys. Observing the art learning process also enables us to consider how children perceive quality and end product with some suggestions on how to address this through longitudinal projects and shorter-term approaches. One of the greatest and most rewarding pleasures as adults working with young children is observing energised moments of engagement where imagination has ignited and actions pursued. Process leads to production if the balance of time, space and engagement is appropriately maintained within a positive, encouraging and dynamic environment. Children's emotions are part of their everyday existence and are full of intense desires, deep anger, furious frustration and elated excitement.
