ABSTRACT

This chapter considers populations having criminal justice involvement who because of their status require special attention. These groups include juveniles, women, felons, crime victims, the disabled, persons with HIV and AIDS, sex offenders, immigrants, the chronically mentally ill, and older inmates. Individuals have differential experiences in the criminal justice system on the basis of their gender, race, parental status, level of ability, age, and social class position, among other characteristics. Victimization and crime rates also vary on the basis of demographic characteristics.
