ABSTRACT

Our approach to reviewing the literature in this book is twofold. First, references are cited as and when they are relevant to a particular argument at any stage. These will keep coming up as we proceed in the book. Second, some of these references are discussed briefly here in this chapter. Though the second exercise may seem repetitive, it serves a purpose here. It gives the reader a better idea of the road ahead in the book in the light of the basic literature review here. Furthermore, the emphasis here is not on the specific writings but on the general way of thinking in these writings. To a small extent, this chapter is an exercise in tracing the history of economic thought on the subject of banking crises and liquidity. Towards the end of this chapter, we will spell out how we intend to build on this literature.
