ABSTRACT
In many ways, the real work of the actor begins after opening night. During the early stock company days and before the Actors’ Equity Association was created to protect them, actors rarely were paid during the rehearsal period. The argument of the producers was simply that the actor didn’t begin work until the audience arrived and besides, there was no revenue until the show was on.
