ABSTRACT

In the early stages of rehearsal we may ask our performers to improvise using rolls and lifts without ever coming off the floor. Smooth contact work looks at taking the effort and conflict out of physical contact. They are instructed to continually move across the floor taking each other's weight and momentum, 'listening' to their partner's physicality and learning how their partners operate. This stands the performers in good stead for when they have to work quickly together to make material for the show. These initial sessions are all about opportunities and possibilities.
