No matter how convenient cell phones are, she will not buy one. The Japanese counterparts of English wh-words also appear in concessive statements like the above sentence. In addition, they take on the meanings of such English words as “every,” “some,” or “any,” depending on the PARTICLE with which they combine, and are better called INDETERMINATE PRONOUNS. In this unit we will study various non-question-word uses of Japanese indeterminate pronouns.
