Today’s reporter has to be able to offer a newsdesk more than just the ability to follow instructions. Reporters need to be able to think up good story ideas and develop them into follow-up stories, features or other stories. This is particularly important for freelances, who need to come up with good ideas in order to ensure someone pays them the following week.
