ABSTRACT

The actor, wishing to explain the character’s behaviour to themself, embarks on a journey of figuring out the given circumstances of the character’s life, and simultaneously tries to put themself into the character’s place. The actor is both the material and the creator. While the actor nurtures and cultivates their idea, their conception of the role, they are fully aware that there is no other material with which to embody the role but their own voice, their own body, thoughts, temperament and feelings. Stanislavski was trying to get actors, when rehearsing a scene, to convey a particular section of the text in their own words. By creating ‘drafts’, actors expand their notion of the facts reflected in the text, and get used to the idea that words must express the character’s train of thought precisely.
