ABSTRACT

I was born just North of the centre of Leeds, in a district called Chapeltown, which seems to have become a lower-middle class suburb but at that time contained the remnants of a village. It was a village that had been enveloped in, I suppose, the latenineteenth century. As you came off the main road you dropped down a wideish lane, and on the right were a few stone-built houses and cottages and courts. Ours was No. 48, Potternewton Lane, in a little court to itself. Cramped in the corner was this old-fashioned house, which may have been a farm labourer's house at one time.
