ABSTRACT
At the very end of the nineteenth century Sheffield's horsedrawn trams were replaced by electric vehicles and the tramways were extended in several directions co-incidentally with the outwards spread of the town. One direction they took was along Abbeydale Road towards Millhouses, then an area very largely in the country. About three miles from the town centre on the left of this main road and between it and the Midland Railway line, there was built a private estate, as it would now be called, of working-class houses; streets and streets of them, bearing names drawn from the Lake District; Windermere Road, Coniston Road, Buttermere Road. I was born on 5 June 1902 at No. 26 Rydal Road.
