ABSTRACT

All structures require an adequate foundation, which is needed to transfer the weight of the building onto the earth below. There are various types of foundations that can be constructed, and their depth is dependent on:

The ground conditions, including type of soils, difference in ground levels.

Location, type and height of trees.

Depth of existing or proposed drainage.

Where foundations are formed in poor soil, are close to existing trees or are within the vicinity of deep drains, then an engineer may be required to design the foundations.
