ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the role of the creative arts in geographical education in the primary school. In the first section I explore creativity in geography and the role of the creative arts in education, including their contribution to children’s well-being. This leads to a discussion about how the creative arts can motivate and engage children, thereby raising achievement. In the second section I consider the implications for classroom practice and suggest a variety of practical ideas for teachers who wish to develop imaginative cross-curricular approaches. These include creative practices drawn from movement and dance, drama and role play, and visual art. In the conclusion I focus on the exciting possibilities for using creative arts approaches to communicate the results of geographical enquiries in rich and meaningful ways.
