ABSTRACT

We know that young babies explore their immediate world in a direct, sensory way. Initially they grasp and suck, respond to sounds and the presence of the mother. Gradually, as limbs grow and become stronger, they probe and touch, enjoying or developing sensation or withdrawing from it. We can observe how this establishes patterns of action and reaction in the baby and can infer that physical patterns which can be seen reflect hidden patterns in the mind of which they are evidence.
