ABSTRACT

David’s Church of England school was built in 1961 in the middle of an industrial city, and is surrounded by small factories – plastics, autocrome, press work. It has some 144 children and there is a nursery unit, a junior school and a comprehensive school, all in close proximity. The infants school is multi-ethnic, with more children of West Indian origin (30 per cent in David’s class) than Indian or Pakistani, but a predominant number of white children.
