ABSTRACT
Recently a colleague of mine told me about a lesson she observed in a secondary school. The teacher was in the middle of directing the class of 13-year-olds through a series of art-related activities when one of the students interrupted the proceedings. He asked the teacher to provide an ‘intellectual justification’ for the activity declaring that what he was being required to do was ‘babyish’. The teacher sent him out of the room.
