ABSTRACT

How you think about the nature of clinical hypnosis profoundly influences your hypnotic style as well as the ways you will apply it. As we have seen, hypnosis is an ambiguous enough phenomenon to invite many different definitions and descriptions. Likewise, hypnosis invites many different theoretical perspectives regarding what makes it possible to perform hypnotic procedures and to elicit the often remarkable responses that people generate. As you would predict, these viewpoints often differ sharply and tend to raise more questions than they can answer. Thus, they stimulate meaningful research, lively debate, and ever deeper understandings of the nature of hypnosis.
