This list of rules which constituted the written code of rules excluded all those rules which were not written down, but which our common sense informed us were indeed regulating social relations and conduct within the school. It was clear the members tended to use the construct 'rules' to refer to a particular and limited set of rules: most of the rules that we as social scientists would wish to call rules were not so defined by members.
