ABSTRACT

Five factors emerged, each developing its own raison d’etre for music education: philosophy, evolving societal needs for educational change and improvement, new music program developments, and innovative explorations of the relationship between music, mind, and brain. The fifth factor, advocacy, developed in parallel with the others. Its role has been to inform the public, policy makers, and educators why music education is necessary and valuable, using the information and data developed in the above four areas.
