ABSTRACT
In 1993, Costa Rica ranked eight among the twenty nations of Latin America in term of per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but it ranked first in terms of social indicators. The life expectancy of its population was the highest in the region, and its poverty incidence and unemployment were the lowest.
