ABSTRACT

Following the previous chapter on the post-transitional change in the parliamentary party system of Indonesia, this chapter deals with the historical transformation in the presidential party system of the Philippines. The Philippines is the only presidential democracy in the world using a plurality electoral system to select its chief executive that has experienced a dramatic change in its political party system. 1 The country’s experience provides a rare opportunity for those interested in the effects of electoral systems on presidential party systems to test their theoretical propositions.
