ABSTRACT

The essential complement to this cultural image is an equally appealing environmental image. Traditionally the environment of cities has been perceived very negatively. Since the mass industrialisation and urbanisation of the nineteenth century the image of the city as dirty, overcrowded, unfriendly and unhealthy has tended to dominate images of the city, in the UK and North America at least. Added to this, more recent images of economic recession, environmental decay and social unrest in inner cities and on peripheral housing estates have not helped to enhance the appeal of the city. Clearly cities still suffer from an image problem, some more so than others.
