ABSTRACT

Like the languages we choose to use, our pronunciation of street names, or the way we emulate a pop star, how we tell stories is a critical component of our communicative repertoire. This chapter uses the medium of YouTube and the approach used in the last chapter as a way of investigating how storylines and story elements circulate and change as they become absorbed into individuals’ repertoires and recognized among different social groups. We will look not only at how storytelling is a crucial tool for negotiating across repertoires, but also at how non-reflective uses of story elements can lead to strange and confusing encounters.
