Systems-oriented design for the built environment

This chapter revisits the way we look at the built environment from the perspective

of systems-oriented design. To meet the challenges of sustainability and globalisa-

tion for our cities and rural environments we need to get to grips with the

interconnectedness and interdependencies that make up the super-complex weave

of our built environment. We need to think deeper and wider into how different

processes influence each other and what the consequences of our interventions

would be. The chapter describes relations to earlier research, and presents recent

research regarding this challenge.
