ABSTRACT

In this chapter two guiding principles for facilitation are proposed. The first focuses upon the trainee and the second focuses upon the task. The first guiding principle is that facilitators enable and empower trainees. This is discussed in relation to the core therapeutic conditions of genuine concern, respect and empathy. Characteristics of empowerment are given. The second guiding principle is that facilitators promote opportunities for learning and seek to remove obstacles to learning by being intentional, flexible and resourceful. Each of these aspects is discussed and some guiding principles for learning and development are suggested, in relation to both trainers and trainees.
