ABSTRACT

The chapter is divided into two parts. The first part addresses assessment issues: the purpose of assessment; assessing skills and competence; validity and reliability; formative and summative assessment; self, peer and trainer assessment; the learning loop of objectives, criteria, process and outcome. The second part of the chapter deals with assessment at each stage of the training model: intrapersonal and interpersonal development; attitudes and values; knowledge and skills; reflection and evaluation. Trainer and trainee perspectives are included in this part of the chapter with examples from the experience of assessing learning journals, counselling skills and competence, and examples from supervised work with clients.
