ABSTRACT

In this chapter a rationale is put forward for the use of an integrative model, and the development of the model is linked to ten assumptions about counselling training. The model for training competent and reflective counsellors is presented and discussed stage by stage. Trainee and client are at the core of the model. Interpersonal and intrapersonal development are central and are embedded within a four-stage learning cycle. Learning objectives are listed at the beginning of each stage. Stage 1 focuses on the development of attitudes and values. Stage 2 concentrates on the development of knowledge and skills. Stage 3 moves on to client work and supervision. Stage 4 is the opportunity for reflection and evaluation.
