ABSTRACT

Governors need to be concerned with how effectively the school is operating and how effectively the governing body is operating.

There is a great deal of research into effectiveness in schools and effectiveness in individual teachers. Dean (1999: 5) has compiled lists covering the work of many writers on these two topics which may provide governors with criteria by which to judge the work of their schools. Research findings about effective schools include the following:
