ABSTRACT

To reiterate, the absolutely basic form of any group is that a number of people gather together in a given place for a period of time. When people gather together in this way where they can see one another and become aware of each other's presence, their behaviour most usually tends to begin to take account of those presences. In simple language, each individual's behaviour is subtly modified by that individual's being aware of coming under the scrutiny of others. How those modifications of behaviour emerge and the forms they take become the basic characteristics of any group.
