ABSTRACT

Once the idea has been conceived that a group may be an appropriate way of dealing with a particular problem or situation, the next important thing to do is to turn the idea into an action – that is, to start the process of bringing a group into being. In some ways this is a task of some difficulty for a beginner. Many people have absorbed the basic information about the ways in which groups of people behave, but interestingly enough, large numbers of these same people, while they have been members of many groups, may never have entered the business of actually starting a group from scratch. The opportunity may never have arisen; there may have been no encouragement from others; or there has never been enough time or available resources. There are a plethora of similar reasons why this should be so.
