ABSTRACT

In discussing the arrival of new challenger parties across much of Western Europe in Chapter 1, a distinction was drawn between New Politics Parties and parties of the extreme right. In both instances, there are problems of definition and characterisation, with different studies employing various designations for the sub-types of parties coming under the general heading. In this chapter, we focus on New Politics Parties (hereafter NPPs), with the purpose of arriving at an empirically grounded classification. The same exercise is carried out for parties of the extreme right in the next chapter.
