ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the overall electoral fortunes of New Politics Parties (NPPs). In Chapter 5, the institutional conditions of the electoral system and public funding of parties were examined for the entire set of 52 new challenger parties. In Chapter 6, the socio-economic and political conditions conducive to the emergence and success of 24 NPPs were examined. In this chapter, I examine the electoral performance of NPPs in light of all three components of our analytic framework: socio-economic, political, and institutional conditions. As the overall model includes the variables measuring institutional conditions, the dependent variable is the seat share of NPPs, as in Chapter 5. As discussed in section 5.3, seat share enables us to capture both the ‘mechanical’ and ‘psychological’ effects of electoral systems. Thus, the socio-economic conditions and the political conditions are tested here again with the seat share of NPPs as their effects are funnelled on from vote share into seat share. In section 7.1, I test the overall model for the entire NPPs, reformist NPPs, and Left Socialist parties. Section 7.2 runs the sensitivity analyses by applying different estimation models. The tables not shown in this chapter are documented in the Appendices.
