ABSTRACT

Stage 2, the middle stage of the morphogenetic cycle, is concerned with interaction. This raises the problem of an appropriate research method. Following Porpora (Porpora 1987), I want to suggest historical narrative as the most suitable approach, one sufficiently sensitive to the shifting and contextually specific allegiances of agency and yet capable of depicting the more obdurate influences of structural relations. There are a number of compelling reasons why historical narrative should be particularly well suited to a sociological realism.
