ABSTRACT
Why did the activities associated with consumption in western societies become an
exciting subject for study in sociology? It might be thought that consumption is more a
matter of interest to economists, or to advertisers and market researchers, rather than to
sociologists, social psychologists or social theorists. A part of the answer to the question
goes back to events in the 1960s, events which affected developments in social theory.
