ABSTRACT
Each chapter inLiterature aboutLanguage concerns literary texts which refer, among their themes, to some aspect of language and language use. The chapter discusses this aspect in terms of linguistic theory and then relates the discussion to a critique of the texts. Suggestions for further work follow each chapter. (A list of chapters and their topics is given at the end of this introduction.)
However, although each of the chapters concentrates on a different area of language and linguistic theory, all of them are concerned with two major tenets: (a) the immensely powerful creativity of language; and (b) the constraints that limit that human creativity.
